superbowl ads PDF Print

I watched all the superbowl ads today and there are some that I really liked and voted for. But my personal favourite is this one:

After watching it several times I noticed the mirror effect that the shots deliver. Except the obvious differences between generations the shots show some movements in the opposite directions, which extend that feeling further:

  • The first shot with the glasses - Bob turns his head from right to left, Will.I.Am turns his from left to right.
  • The father and the daughter spin from right to left, and the mother with the son turns the opposite direction.
  • The young skateboarder turns from left to right and Tony Hawk ( Is he ?) turns from right to left.
  • Opposite kicks from Bruce Lee and that Lady who I don't know.
  • Right-Left side of the public.
  • In, Out for the van shot.
  • The rest are obvious.

Beautiful.

Bidirectionality in Maya PDF Print

I was trying to explain to a colleague rigger what types of connections spit a cycle error. So the easiest way to explain it to her was to ask her to make some kind of connections where one transform ( object ) drives the position of another second transform and the second transform drives the first at the same time. Of course we all know that Maya is designed in such a way that if she sees a backward connection in the DG she will complain and not behave properly. So we made a simple thing:

  •  create a locator and a box , move them somewhere in the space. Freeze their transformations.
  • group the locator and group the box like that:

  • move the group's pivots at the same place where the object underneath them is located.
  • Freeze the transformations of all the objects in the scene. Everything must be at 0 0 0 - the groups and the objects
  • Now open the connection editor and connect the translaton of the locator with the translation of the group of the box. That way when you move the locator , it moves the group above the box and the box obviously as it's a child.
  • Open the connection editor again and connect the box translation with the locator's group translation. In the opposite direction.

Here I was SURE Maya will spit a cycle error. But no.... I even looked to see if I turned off the warnings. I wasn't. Then I realised it's because Maya is designed in such a way. The thing is the DG only sees direct connections between nodes and not  parent - child relationships. That is what the DAG is for, but it's separated in Maya. Here you see the Hypergraph connections after this test:

You see there is not a cycle in the DG so Maya will behave properly. You can key one object from 0 to 10, then animate the other from 10 to 20 and everything will work as you expect it.

From two days I'm trying to invent something that this can be actually used for, but with no success. As long as everything is separated Maya is ok, but when you connect some of these nodes with some system you want to build Maya sees that it's a cycle.
